Reinforcement method of masonry structure

The practical masonry structure reinforcement can be divided into two types: direct reinforcement and indirect reinforcement. According to the actual conditions and the requirements of application, the suitable method can be selected.

Direct reinforcement method for masonry structure

  • External layer of the reinforced concrete

This method belongs to a kind of composite section reinforcement method. Its advantages are simple construction technology and strong adaptability, and its bearing capacity is greatly improved after masonry reinforcement, and has mature design and construction experience.

It is suitable for reinforcement of columns and wall walls.

The disadvantage is that the wet operation time of site construction is long, and has a certain impact on production and life, and the clearance of reinforced buildings will be reduced.


  • External layer of the reinforced concrete mortar

Reinforced cement mortar and reinforcement layer refers to the need to reinforce the brick wall surface to remove paint layer, both sides of the brick wall with 4 ~ 8mm in diameter of the steel mesh reinforcement cement mortar, and then wipe the surface layer.

This method belongs to a kind of composite section reinforcement method.

The advantages of the method are similar to that of reinforced concrete, but the bearing capacity is not as good as that of the former.It is suitable for masonry walls reinforcement, and sometimes used for reinforcement of reinforced concrete outer walls to reinforce walls with both sides.


  • Add the buttress column

The connection between the concrete buttress column and the original wall is very important.

The method is one of the strengthened section reinforcement method. Its advantages are similar to that of reinforced concrete, but the bearing capacity is limited, and it is difficult to meet the seismic requirements. Generally, it is only applied in non seismic areas.

Indirect reinforcement method for masonry structure

  • Unbonded outsourced steel reinforcement method

The use of cement mortar will be pasted on the bearing angle by the surrounding brick column, and then use the clamping and batten plate and angle welding as a whole, remove the clamp, paint the cement slurry to protect steel.

This method belongs to the traditional reinforcement method, which has the advantages of simple construction, less workload on site and less wet work.

It is suitable for strengthening the masonry columns which do not allow the enlargement of the section size of the original components, but also require a substantial increase in the bearing capacity of the sections.

The drawback is that the cost of reinforcement is high, and the protective measures similar to steel structure are needed.


  • Prestressed strut reinforcement method

This method can greatly improve the bearing capacity of masonry columns, and the reinforcement effect is reliable; for the reinforced masonry structure to reinforce Gao Yingli, high strain state; the drawback is not used for temperature is over 600 DEG C environment.
