What is the K number? What are the indicators used to measure? Is the larger the K number, the better the quality of carbon fiber products and the higher the strength?

Generally speaking, [K number] refers to thousands of monofilaments in a bundle of carbon fiber. 3K means that there are 3,000 monofilament carbon fibers in a bundle of carbon fibers, and 12K means that there are 12,000 monofilament carbon fibers in a bundle of carbon fibers.

From the above definition, we can easily conclude that the larger the K number, the thicker the corresponding carbon fiber bundle. Therefore, many people subconsciously think that the thicker the carbon fiber bundle, the better its quality and the higher its strength.

This is not the case.

To produce fiber bundles of different thicknesses, the number of carbon fibers used is also different. If it is to make thick fiber bundles, that is, fiber bundles with a large K number, naturally more carbon fibers will be used and will not directly affect the change in strength. The real measure of carbon fiber strength is the T value.

T value is the "carbon fiber model" set by Toray, a famous Japanese carbon fiber manufacturer, and it is also a common grade standard in the industry.

For example: T300/3K, T300/6K, T300/12K, their strength is the same, the difference is only in the thickness of the carbon fiber. 3K woven carbon fiber fabric is relatively fine, so under the same material and strength, the price of 3K is usually higher than 6K and 12K.

Of course, it is far from enough to judge the quality of carbon fiber fabric by only relying on K and T values. Choosing the right manufacturer is the key.
